Organising Foundations is a comprehensive three-day workshop for organisers and senior experienced delegates, aimed at broadly developing the skills, knowledge and understanding for effective organising of working people for building and strengthening our unions. The first two days of this workshop are kanohi ki te kanohi, with a short gap to the third day which is facilitated via Zoom.
NOTE: This workshop is the first of three courses in the CTU’s development pathway, with the other two programmes being (1) Organising Conversations - Intensive and (2) Developing Workplace Leaders.

Please note that this course is approved for ERE leave (Course 520).

A comprehensive and practical three-day workshop for organisers and senior, experienced delegates, covering the skills and techniques for communicating effectively with working people to motivate/shift them – to join a union, become a workplace leader or to take action. The first two days of this workshop are kanohi ki te kanohi, with a short gap to the third day which is facilitated via Zoom.

A course for organisers and lead organisers on learning how to develop the skills of their workplace leaders through purpose driven 1:1 meetings and conversations. From defining 'leadership' all the way through to designing a development plan for your workplace leaders, this course will explore effective development methods to ensure workers can reach their potential and build power in the workplace. The first two days of this workshop are kanohi ki te kanohi, with a short gap to the third day which is facilitated via Zoom.

Much of the key work required for successful negotiations happens well before organisers reach the bargaining table. This online workshop covers organising objectives during the pre-negotiation phase to ensure maximum effectiveness. The workshop consists of three 90-minute blocks with associated resources.

Individual member issues, or casework, are an important part of what unions do for their members. While this work can be rewarding, it can also be complex, dealing with members when they are vulnerable, and drawing organisers away from their core work of organising.

This new 2-day course looks at the employment relations dispute resolution system from principles, the legal framework, and from the beginning of a workplace issue, through a disciplinary, personal grievance, mediation, and up to the Employment Relations Authority. This course is aimed at organisers who are new to the movement or would just like to get better at representing their members through casework.

A skills course for union organisers and other paid officials involved in negotiating collective agreements. This two-day course uses an action methods approach focusing on building participants’ confidence and advocacy skills in collective agreements negotiations, using realistic simulated exercises.

A two-day workshop, run in partnership with WorksafeReps, is designed for union organisers on learning the skills, knowledge and understanding of health and safety organising for achieving sustainable processes and practices that create good workplace H & S. The course examines the key elements of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and associated regulations, understanding the rights and responsibilities of health and safety representatives, and how to go about creating the right conditions for their election, support, learning and development.

Please note that this course is approved for ERE leave (Course 726).

Union delegates and staff take collective ownership of growing union membership, activating members, and building the movements power.  These sessions are set up as facilitated discussions to learn new skills, share valuable information, and just check in with peers.

Each session, we’ll cover different topics and create a learning environment in which we build our collective knowledge and skills.

These are one hour online sessions, hosted by Sandra Grey.

This course is for workers, health and safety representatives, team leaders and managers who want to understand how to prevent and manage fatigue in their workplace, with a focus on shift work and irregular working hours.

Physical and mental fatigue are hazards that effect a person’s ability to work safely. Fatigue reduces alertness and can lead to errors and an increase in incidents and injuries.

Please note that this course is approved for ERE leave (Course 737).

The Employment Leave Act is the largest change to workers leave entitlements in generations and will replace genuine entitlements with an accrual system, with many workers being worse off. While the Act comes into force in mid-2028, organisers are already facing issues at the bargaining table as employers prepare their systems and collective agreements for the new law.

The CTU Te Kauae Kaimahi is offering this one-day course aimed at union officials who lead negotiations (primarily organisers) to examine the changes to the law, what this means for members, and how to update collective agreements through collective bargaining. We are fortunate to have co-facilitation from MBIE for this important course.
